The Samsung Gear VR is one of the most affordable VR headsets you can buy right now. The Xbox One controller is one of the best controllers you can buy right now. Microsoft is bringing both a bit closer.
Microsoft is rolling out Xbox One controller support for Samsung’s Gear VR headset. A new version of the Xbox One controller was announced at E3 2016 back in June. While it comes with a whole bunch of enhancements and refinements, it also comes with Bluetooth support – which is what Microsoft is using for Gear VR.
Starting from sometime in October, the Xbox One controller will work with Gear VR – however, games will still need to add support for it to work. The first game doing this is Microsoft’s own Minecraft: Gear VR Edition.
You will also need to make sure you have updated the firmware for the Xbox One controller itself – this you can do on an Xbox One, or a PC running Windows 10 Anniversary Update.
Microsoft has made this handy guide to help you get your Xbox One controller ready for the Gear VR. You won’t be able to update the game or the firmware to the versions mentioned in the guide yet, though.
While officially this support is for GearVR; GearVR is nothing but a shell, in which you put your Samsung phone. What we are getting at is this: The Xbox One controller support is for Samsung Android phones, not the Gear VR specifically.
Whether the controller will work with other Android phones is a mystery for now, but it will sure be nice to have it.
