Office Insiders on Android can now open PDF files, scripts, and more

The Office team has released an update for the Office Insiders on Android. The new update bumps the version number to 16.0.7830.1002 and brings some exciting new features with it.

Word, Excel, PowerPoint; the big three Office products have received something new with this update. Let’s just get straight to it.

The Update

Microsoft recently added add-in support for Office users on iOS – that was for everyone, not just Insiders. This Insider update doesn’t yet add support for add-ins, although Microsoft has said that the feature is in the works.

Still, there’s plenty to look forward to.

Word: The Word app for Android can now view PDF files – emphasis on ‘view,’ as the ability to edit PDF files remains missing. Hopefully, that’s next on the feature list.

Excel: The Excel app for Android gets just a bit more powerful with this update. It’s now possible to open Excel files containing scripts as well as files containing Query Tables with parameters.

Word, Excel, and PowerPoint: This feature is coming for all three apps; It’s now possible to add shadow and reflection effects to any picture in an Office document. Once an image is added, simply select the image, and choose the desired effect from the ‘Pictures’ tab.

If you are an Office Insider, the update is rolling out for you as you read this. Google’s Play Store might take its sweet time though, so be patient.

Once you do receive the update, make sure to submit any and all feedback. The Office Insider for Android community on Google+ has plenty of Office Product Managers interacting with the Insider community on a regular basis.

If you are not an Office Insider but would really like to try these features out despite the potential bugs; joining the Office Insider program doesn’t take a lot of effort.
