Middle-earth: Shadow of War announced for Project Scorpio, Xbox One, and Windows 10

After some unfortunate leaks ruining the surprise yesterday, Middle-earth: Shadow of War is now official. Monolith Productions are back in developing the sequel to 2014’s hit game – Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor.

However, what was not in yesterday’s leak was the game’s availability on Microsoft’s upcoming console – Project Scorpio.

Today, Microsoft themselves have confirmed that Middle-earth: Shadow of War will launch on the Xbox One, Project Scorpio, and Windows 10 platforms as well as being part of Microsoft’s Xbox Play Anywhere program.

This marks the second triple-A title by a third-party publisher to enter the Xbox Play Anywhere program. Capcom’s latest survival horror game – Resident Evil 7 – taking the first spot last month.

Middle-earth: Shadow of War

Following the end of Shadow of Mordor, we are back in Middle-earth, advancing the original plotline of Talion and Celebrinbor. This time around the ranger and his spirit companion are going against the big baddies Sauron and his Nazgul themselves.

To help in this monumental task, the player will create a new Ring of Power to wield against Sauron’s forces. Although this is effectively abandoning the lore of the Lord of the Rings, we can expect some great gameplay mechanics.

The Nemesis System is returning from the original game, bringing back its dynamic way of selecting high-value enemy targets. Enemies will remember close encounters with the player, with Uruks that do survive getting promotions, however, as the player can create double agents within armies, they can weaken or even kill hard to approach Uruks using moles players have placed as bodyguards beforehand.

However, unlike before, the system will uniquely affect the environment and even other characters, depending on the player’s actions; making every play through an entirely different experience thanks to the award-winning Nemesis System.

Middle-earth: Shadow of War is coming to the Xbox One, Project Scorpio, Windows 10, Steam, and PlayStation 4 platforms. Warner Bros. Interactive announcing the 22nd of August 2017 as the official release date for the game.
