This year, Star Trek will be marking its 50th anniversary – making it one of the few science fiction franchises that are half a century old. Doctor Who has good company.
The Star Trek TNG Bluetooth ComBadge made by the folks at ODM Fametek is a fully functioning badge straight out of Star Trek. It features magnets that stick to your shirt, the classic (and accurate) chirp sound effect when you press it, speakers with high-quality neodymium magnets – and a body that is made out of ABS and Zinc.
This is quite possibly one of the best things that could have been made to celebrate the 50th anniversary. The badge links up with your phone via Bluetooth and has full support for answering calls, listening to music and even provide access to Cortana, Google Now or Siri. To make sure it catches your voice, it also comes with a nice built-in microphone.
Since the badge is not actually from the Star Trek – it does have limitations. It has a range of about 33 feet. The frequency response is from 200 Hz to 20 kHz, and the battery is only good for 10 hours. To charge that battery, it comes with a micro-USB port.
For what it offers, the badge is quite an expensive purchase – at 79.99$ you could possibly find better hands-free Bluetooth solutions. But none of them would be from Star Trek. This is the price to pay for having cool things. It also starts shipping in November, so there is plenty of waiting to be done before you can actually get to using it.
Preorders are open at ThinkGeek, but the design has not been officially approved by the licensor yet, which could mean it might come with a few minor changes.
