Photos App Not Opening in Windows 10? Here’s the fix!

The Photos app on Windows 10 is amazing. It is a huge improvement from what Microsoft gave us on Windows 8 and Windows 8.1. You can actually use it as a default photo viewer if you wish to without installing any third party photo viewer.

But sometimes these Windows 10 apps can stop working at all. This mostly happens with the Photos app in Windows 10. You might think of it as a big issue but it is very easy to solve. This post is about the fixes that you can apply in order to fix the Photos app not opening issue in Windows 10.

Solution #1: Update your Windows 10

This might be a problem because of a faulty update that was installed. It is a good idea to make sure your Windows 10 is up-to-date. To make sure your Windows 10 is updated, just go to Settings > Updates & Security > Check for updates.

This action will start checking for new updates for your Windows 10 system and the updates will be downloaded and installed. The Photos app should be fixed now. But if the photo app is still not working then you can try the next solution.

Solution #2: Reinstall the Photos app package

To reinstall the Photos app package on your Windows 10, just follow the steps below.

  • Open Windows PowerShell as administrator by right-clicking on it and choosing Run as Administrator.
  • If you don’t know where PowerShell is, just open the Start Menu. Then type and search for “powershell”.

  • Now type in the following command inside the PowerShell window and press ENTER.

Get-AppXPackage -AllUsers | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register “$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml”}

  • You will notice that PowerShell will start installing the app again. Wait for the process to complete.
  • Now restart your Windows 10 system after this is done.

Try opening the Photos app now and you will be able to use the Photos app on Windows 10 without any problems.

Solution #3: Make Photos your default photo viewer

This solution will make Photos your default photo viewer on your Windows 10 system. To do that, just follow the steps below.

  • Open the Settings app through Start Menu.
  • Now go to Settings > System > Default app.
  • Now scroll down and find the option that says Set defaults by app.
  • This will open up a new window and here you need to look for the Photos app.

  • Now click on Set this program as default and then press the OK button.

Doing this will make the Photos app the default photo viewer for your Windows 10 system. This should fix the Photos app not opening error as well.

Solution #4: Restore default libraries

This is a minor fix for this issue and you never know this might just work. Just follow the steps below.

  • Open the File Explorer and then on the top of the window click on the View tab.
  • Now click on Navigation pane on the left most side. You now have to choose Show libraries.
  • You will notice that Libraries will start appearing on the File Explorer now.

  • Right click on Libraries and then choose Restore default libraries option. That’s all you need to do.

After you have tried all these solutions, then I am sure at least one of them will work for you. These suggested fixes aren’t even hard to follow so you can perform them easily. I hope this tutorial was helpful and you were able to fix the Photos App Not Opening problem in Windows 10.
